Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth: The Executive Order, Explained

Posted by Emma Marshall-Torres on Apr 6, 2017 1:23:37 PM

This post is part one of a two-post series exploring the design and potential implications of President Trump's recent Executive Order, Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth.

Early last week, President Donald Trump released an executive order with steep consequences. Flanked by representatives from the fossil fuel industries, Trump endorsed a declaration that aspires to revive a plummeting domestic coal industry and, as promised during his campaign, breathe economic vitality back into mining communities across the country.

Creeping Regrets: Nevada Seeks to Revive Rooftop Solar Industry

Posted by Emma Marshall-Torres on Feb 23, 2017 5:22:09 PM

Nevada’s promising rooftop solar industry hit a wall last year, after state legislation slashed rates for net metering and cut into financial incentives for homeowners. The new standard rendered solar panels a costly investment out of range for a majority of Nevadans, and was pushed largely by the state’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

Utility-scale Clean Energy -- A Threat to Distributed Generation?

Duke Energy, one of the nation’s largest electric power holding companies, recently acquired a solar portfolio from SunPower Corp. The purchase includes the 15 megawatt (MW) Wildwood Solar II array, and the 20 MW Rio Bravo I and 20 MW Rio Bravo II systems, all located in Kern County, California.

The three acquisitions neighbor two pre-existing Duke Energy solar sites, and bring the total of the company’s solar holdings to 181 MW in California alone, and 2,900 MW overall solar capacity within its 52,000 MW portfolio.

China Cements Itself as Global Solar Leader, Just in Time

Information originating from the National Energy Administration (NEA) showed that in 2016 alone, China implemented 34.24 gigawatts (GW) of additional solar energy. With a confirmed goal of 110 GW by 2020, project deployment is centered predominantly in the east, with large-scale endeavours overshadowing a previously-planned carve-out for distributed generation. Industry experts believe that the figure is likely to be exceeded by the final date, and may soon eclipse the American market for clean energy.

While solar energy is experiencing widespread growth around the world, many regions, especially those with highly concentrated urban areas, have grappled with issues of space. Metropolitan areas in Asia, the UK, and Brazil struggle to find adequate space for solar panels, which typically need to be affixed to a surface such as a rooftop, facade of a building, or the ground.

The Future of Clean Power under the New Administration

Posted by Emma Marshall-Torres on Jan 12, 2017 11:39:14 AM

In a letter published earlier this month, a coalition of 19 states and munincipalities have appealed to President-elect Donald Trump to protect the Clean Power Plan, a rule that "reasonably limits emissions from fossil-fueled power plants". The Plan is a signature accomplishment of the Obama administration, and is projected to eliminate 870 million tons of harmful gases by 2030-- equal to the yearly emissions of about 160 million cars, and 30% of carbon pollution. The legislation covers 1,000 plants, implementing state-specific reduction targets that would collectively lower power plants' carbon emissions to 2005 levels by 2030.
