Find me on:

Last May, Atlanta became the 27th city in the United States, and the largest Southern city to commit to 100% renewable energy. Introduced by Councilman Kwanza Hall, the Atlanta City Council unanimously approved a measure that establishes a community-wide goal of transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035.

The commitment, known as ATL100, comes on the heels of the Georgia Public Service Commission approval of Georgia Power Company’s 2016 long-term energy plan, which calls for up to 1,600 megawatts of new renewable energy by 2021. The city’s push for clean energy is part of The Solution Project’s 100% Campaign, an organization founded to support and accelerate the transition to clean energy for all.

While filming the next installment of The Avengers in Atlanta this summer, actor, filmmaker and Solutions Project founder Mark Ruffalo teamed up with co-star Chris Evans to record video messages celebrating five local Atlanta leaders who give their 100% to create a city powered by clean, renewable energy for all.

On September 19, solar advocates and major players gathered at the historic Plaza Theater in Atlanta to celebrate the official launch of ATL100. There solar leaders Dr. Joyce Dorsey, Amelia Shenstone, Dr. Yomi Noibi, Shan Arora, and Becky Rafter, were surprised with this video recognition from the silver-screen superheroes.

“As Captain America, I’m what Tony Stark would call one of earth’s mightiest heroes,” Evans says. “But I only play a superhero on screen- that world’s make believe.”

“Right here in Atlanta, there are real life superheroes,” Ruffalo continues. “Locals who team up and give 100% to create a city powered by clean, renewable energy for all.”

The actors then call out each of these five individuals, inviting them to stand in recognition for their expertise and leadership in making Atlanta a Solution Project 100% city, as drawings of each leader dressed in superhero attire lit up on screen.

“Shan Arora is a data superhero. This former tax attorney crunches the numbers on Georgia’s energy to chart a new path where Atlanta is powered proudly by solar energy."

“Becky Rafter is a wonder woman pushing Atlanta in a new direction with a lot less nuclear waste and a lot more fierce women taking the reigns in their neighborhoods to protect the people and places they love.”

“Dr. Joyce Dorsey‘s superpowers come from her big brain and her big heart. Joyce works tirelessly to get local Atlantans the support they need to live the life they want – from help with skyrocketing energy bills to job training, Joyce basically runs a superhero training school.”

“Amelia Shenstone is here to kick coal’s butt. She champions clean energy and energy efficiency at every turn pushing all of Atlanta towards healthy energy for everybody."

“Dr. Yomi Noibi is an environmental health crusader who wants everyone to own their power. This doctor knows that healthy people need healthy communities powered by the wind, water, and sun.”

Congratulations to Shan Arora, Becky Rafter, Dr. Joyce Dorsey, Amelia Shenstone, Dr. Yomi Noibi, and the city of Atlanta, on this momentous commitment.
