IKEA to Construct Largest Non-utility Solar Arrays in OH, IL

In a continuation of what is now a growing trend of private sector-involvement, IKEA will soon become the largest non-utility owner of solar power in the state of Ohio. Boasting a potential of 1.21 MW potential from 3,546 PV panels, the Columbus, OH project is the second in the state for the house-ware giant; its Cincinnati store was topped with a 1.026 MW array in 2012. |
We are excited about furthering our sustainability commitment with solar panels on the future Columbus store, said Lars Petersson, president of IKEA U.S., At Ikea we have a mission to create a better everyday life for the many, and IKEA Columbus can add to this goal while also making us the largest non-utility solar owner in Ohio.
At 213,000 sq. feet, the system will effectively offset 1,017 tons of carbon dioxide-- equivalent to taking nearly 200 cars off the road. The statement comes about two weeks after the announcement of IKEA's plans to build the largest rooftop array in Illinois, atop its Midwest distribution center in Joliet; completion is expected to be completed in the fall of 2017. Illinois will also be home to the big box store's 49-turbine wind farm project in Hoopeston.
The Scandinavian brand has already introduced 45 solar projects in the US, with rooftop solar present on about 90% of its American locations. With more than 40 MW of potential among these sites, IKEA continues to make good on its $2.5 billion investment to fund efforts to combine renewable energy and their global operations through 2020.
