The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) released a plan that would expedite the connection of solar, wind, and battery projects to the energy grid. Long wait times for projects to connect to the grid and high grid upgrading costs, according to Canary Media, are currently preventing hundreds of gigawatts of clean energy projects from being connected to grids. These challenges have posed significant obstacles for the development of renewable energy projects around the country.

Jobs in the clean energy sector are steadily increasing, according to the Environmental Defense Fund, due to increased demand for clean energy and efficient technology, falling technology costs, and supportive investments. Due to the necessity of meeting sustainability targets, jobs in the solar industry are rapidly expanding both domestically and abroad. According to the National Solar Jobs Census, the solar job market is predicted to grow from over 230,000 jobs in 2020 to around 400,000 workers by 2030.

Despite the high prevalence of corporate sustainability goals and rising energy costs, only 3.5% of the commercial and industrial complex currently have solar according to Wood Mackenzie. According to G&A Institute and Perillon, 92% of S&P 500 companies, 88% of public companies, and 67% of private companies have sustainability goals. Simultaneously, energy costs have been rapidly increasing. In March 2022, The Guardian found that traditional energy costs, particularly natural gas, increased by 24% in the past year and the cost of general electricity increased by 9%. A combination of increasing energy costs and the decreasing cost of renewable energy now means that œsolar power is now the cheapest electricity in history according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Solar energy has the ability to both accomplish companies sustainability goals and reduce costs for the company and their consumers.
