California's electric grid system experienced an extraordinary occurrence. For a brief moment, the entire state's grid system was powered by nearly 100% of clean renewable energy.

According to a CAISO release, the state's grid system ran on approximately 97% renewable energy at 3:39 p.m. on Sunday, April 3rd, and met all state energy needs. This was slightly higher than the previous week when a record of around 96.4% was set. While this moment was brief, it demonstrated that meeting energy demand with renewable energy is entirely possible.

The production of renewable energy typically peaks in the spring and summer seasons. This is because the Earth's trajectory and distance from the sun allow for longer and stronger periods of solar energy production. According to a report from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), wind energy generation typically peaks from January to April and September to December. In California, however, the peak for wind energy production occurs from January to June, with a 30% increase over the annual median wind capacity.

So, what does all of this mean? It means that with enough renewable energy project installations, we may be able to significantly meet our energy needs.
